PROJECT OVERVIEW
The project develops a long-term master plan for a 550-acre institutional campus in Palakkad. Rather than treating the campus as a single finished object, the proposal establishes a phased framework through which academic, residential, recreational and service facilities could expand over time while remaining connected by a coherent landscape and circulation system.
The planning strategy was developed through an analysis of topography, vegetation, climate, access, drainage, water bodies and existing ecological conditions. Lower-impact development zones were identified while streams, forested areas, rocky terrain and steeper slopes were retained or avoided where possible.
Within the wider campus framework, the Central Library and Administration Block were developed in greater architectural and technical detail, connecting site-scale decisions with the everyday experience of students, staff and visitors.
Reading the Landscape
The design process began by treating the site as a landscape system rather than as empty land for construction. Vegetation, contours, rocky areas, drainage channels, water bodies, access routes and surrounding development were mapped to understand where growth could occur with the least environmental disturbance.
The analysis identified relatively level and less ecologically sensitive areas for construction while preserving important forest cover, natural drainage routes and existing water systems. Palakkad’s warm climate, seasonal rainfall and prevailing wind direction also informed orientation, shading and landscape planning.
Working with the Terrain
The site rises and falls across an elongated landscape, with steeper areas concentrated near parts of the boundary and gentler slopes across much of the proposed development zone. Contour sections were used to understand drainage direction, identify suitable construction areas and reduce unnecessary disturbance to the natural terrain.
This analysis helped position buildings, roads and open spaces in relation to existing ground levels rather than imposing a completely flattened campus.

A Campus Designed to Grow
The master plan was conceived as a framework for phased development. Academic clusters, shared resources, residential areas, public facilities and infrastructure could be delivered progressively without losing the overall spatial structure of the campus.
Academic departments were organised around shared common-resource buildings and shaded internal spaces. The Central Library was positioned between the principal academic zones, while the Administration Block was placed near the main entrance to create a clear public threshold. Noise-generating workshops and technical facilities were positioned toward the campus edges, away from the central learning environment.

Zoning, Access and Shared Resources
The campus structure balances separation and connection. Academic departments form identifiable clusters while remaining linked through common facilities, pedestrian routes and shared landscapes. Vehicular movement is organised through a clear road hierarchy, allowing central academic areas to remain more pedestrian-oriented.
The library acts as a shared destination between academic zones, while the Administration Block marks the campus entrance. Residential and recreational functions are connected to the institutional core but remain distinct from heavier technical and service activities.

Water as a Campus System
Water management was integrated into the master plan as both infrastructure and landscape. Existing drainage patterns and water channels were connected to a wider system of reservoirs, treatment facilities, rainwater-harvesting ponds, overhead tanks and distribution lines.
Rather than concealing water as a purely technical system, the proposal also uses it to shape public spaces. The rainwater-harvesting pond beside the Central Library becomes a visual and environmental feature while supporting the larger water strategy of the campus.

Central Library: the shared academic heart
Located between the main academic zones, the Central Library was designed as a shared intellectual and social centre for the campus. Its articulated linear form follows the edge of a rainwater-harvesting pond, allowing reading spaces, circulation areas and terraces to overlook the water.
The building brings together core reading areas, group-study spaces, a digital library, administration, archives, exhibition areas, student facilities and supporting services. A multi-storey central atrium connects the different levels and provides a shared internal space for movement, informal interaction and orientation.

Learning Around Light and Water
Reading and study spaces were organised to receive daylight and views while reducing direct solar exposure. The pond-facing façade creates a strong visual relationship with the landscape, while shaded glazing, roof projections and recessed openings help control heat gain.
The central atrium brings light deeper into the plan and connects reading rooms, exhibition spaces, informal seating and circulation across the building. Different study environments range from open reading areas to individual workstations, group rooms and quieter research spaces.
Administration Block
Positioned close to the main entrance, the Administration Block was developed as the public and organisational threshold of the campus. Its planning brings together administrative offices, meeting areas, public-facing functions and supporting services within a clear circulation structure.
Courtyards introduce daylight and landscape into the plan, while shaded circulation and façade articulation respond to Palakkad’s climate. The building’s relationship with the entrance road helps visitors understand and access the campus without entering deeper academic zones.

Technical Development
The project was carried beyond conceptual planning into structural coordination, building services, façade studies and selected construction details. Column grids, service cores, drainage layouts, rainwater infrastructure, sections and architectural details were developed to test how the design could function as a buildable institutional environment.
This technical development connected the master-plan strategy with the practical requirements of structure, circulation, climate control, servicing and maintenance.

From Territory to Building
This project allowed me to work across multiple scales, from reading a 550-acre landscape and establishing a long-term development framework to designing individual institutional buildings and resolving selected technical systems.
The process strengthened my understanding of how topography, ecology, infrastructure, movement and human experience influence one another. It also developed my ability to translate research and planning decisions into architectural spaces, technical drawings and visual communication.
